A few days ago I went to Santa Cruz to grab lunch with Brandon, a college pastor in Santa Cruz. We met to dream together about what it might look like to equip students to share their faith and make disciples on campus at UC Santa Cruz and Cabrillo College.
It was so encouraging to hear Brandon’s heart for reaching college students! In Brandon’s college group there are more than a dozen students who attend Cabrillo College…. and another handful of students who attend UC Santa Cruz. We are currently talking about next steps for empowering these students to make an impact for the Gospel on their campuses. I am so thankful for the opportunity to partner in the Gospel with such cream-of-the-crop Christian leaders such as Brandon!
“There are over 30,000 college students in Santa Cruz
and no significant college ministry!”
“The largest religious club on campus at UC Santa Cruz is a Pagan club!”
Pray for the Lord to use Brandon to bring a spiritual renewal movement to Santa Cruz, starting on the college campuses!
Oh how I thank the Lord for Daniel! Several years ago I met Daniel while doing ministry at Columbia College in Sonora. After discipling Daniel for a few months on campus at Columbia College, he was passionate about making disciples as well! Soon he was leading a Bible study on campus and actively sharing his faith at Columbia College.
Then he transferred to Cabrillo College near Santa Cruz. And guess what! Daniel started a CRU movement there at Cabrillo College. There are now a few Bible studies at Cabrillo College… and students are sharing their faith on campus!
And then Daniel transferred to CSU Monterey…. where there was already a CRU movement. And guess what! Daniel quickly became involved and continues to do evangelism on campus at CSU Monterey. He also loves training other students in doing evangelism.
Daniel and several of the CRU students at Cabrillo College are a part of a church college group in Scotts Valley, and we had the privilege of hosting them for their winter retreat last weekend. Highlights for me:
I am also so thankful for the opportunity to get to know pastor Ron! We plan to grab a meal together next time I am in the Santa Cruz area. I look forward to how the Lord will continue to grow our partnership with this church in Scotts Valley to make disciples at Cabrillo College and beyond.
I just returned home from campus ministry on the coast. Here is a wonderful God-story from Cabrillo College:
A few years ago we planted a CRU chapter at Cabrillo College. I went back a few days ago to encourage them and continue training them in evangelism and disciple-making. Tryston, one of the CRU student leaders, joined me doing spiritual surveys. One of the young men we spoke with was Doug. Doug shared with us that he grew up in southern CA and had come to Santa Cruz on his own to go to school. He grew up going to church with his family. (He has two older sisters who are both married.) He was involved in the youth group, too. And now… .he is trying to figure things out for himself spiritually. He is not sure if Jesus is the answer, but he is open and eager to learn more. In the midst of our conversation, we discovered that he doesn't really understand the gospel.
“If you have a few more minutes, I’d love to explain the Gospel to you from a verse in the Bible,” I offer. “I’ve got plenty of time!” he responds. I turn to John 3:16 in a pocket-Gospel of John. After reading it to him, I ask, “You ever heard this verse before?” His answer: “I am pretty sure that’s the verse that my sister texted to me this morning!” I say, “No way! Show me.” So he shows me this text from his sister… and sure enough, she had texted him a simple text just a few hours earlier: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
“Doug!” I say. “That’s pretty cool! I don’t know if you’re thinking what I’m thinking…. but I’m thinking that God’s trying to get your attention!”
We share the Gospel with him from John 3:16, and we teach him how to do a One Thing Study. He also expresses interest in meeting up with Tryston again to do One Thing Studies.
Last I heard, Tryston and Doug were texting back and forth to figure out a time to meet up.
Thinking about it later, I processed what is likely going on: Doug’s sister is married and lives in Idaho. She loves her younger brother and is pained by the fact that he has walked away from the faith. She prays for him daily, pouring her heart out to God begging Him to work in her brother’s life - begging God to put people in his path that would love him well and bring him back to Jesus. Once in a while she even texts him Bible verses, hoping and praying that God will somehow use them to stir something in his heart. On the morning of February 1st, she prays for him and then texts him John 3:16. She prays that God would connect him with other believers, even on campus at Cabrillo College hundreds of miles away…. and God uses us to answer her prayer!
Doug is your son. Doug is your daughter. Doug is your grandson. There are so many Dougs on our college campuses! They grew up in the church…. they were a part of the youth group... they even went on mission trips. Now they are in college trying to discover for themselves what life is all about, and if Jesus is relevant.
We are there to proclaim to these ‘Dougs’ that Jesus IS relevant. Jesus is not just relevant, he is LIFE.
Thank you for sending us to the 'Dougs'!
I recently had the privilege of spending two days at Cabrillo College doing evangelism and disciple-making training. Here are a few highlights:
I have a pretty awesome job! One of the things I get to do on a weekly basis is get updates from our different campus leaders. I spoke with Daniel (top left) a few days ago and heard some of the exciting things going on at Cabrillo College:
One of the coolest things? When I was talking with Daniel, he was listing off names of students who had taken the spiritual survey and expressed interest.... names of students that had started to come to Bible study... and names of students who were bringing friends..... and more. Wonderful God Stories!
I just love looking at these faces in these pictures... smiling faces. These are young men and women that God loves very much. And they are now connected to a community of faith on campus, helping each other to KNOW Jesus, GROW in their faith, and GO and make disciples.
We are so thankful that we get to partner with YOU to start discipleship movements on college campuses. May the Lord continue to change lives at Cabrillo College.
THANK YOU for joining us in this adventure.
What an amazing three days at Cabrillo College!
Here are some highlights:
Having coffee with Kyle, a college pastor at a nearby church
It was wonderful to visit with a local college pastor and dream about reaching the campus together! We look forward to partnering with Kyle and his college group to make disciples at Cabrillo College. One of our first goals for starting a CRU movement on a campus is finding a local leader; it appears we have found one in Kyle. What an answer to prayer!
Seeing Casey (a new believer) enjoying community
Several months ago when we were doing spiritual surveys on campus at Cabrillo College, we met Casey. Casey put her faith in Jesus the second day we were on campus! It was wonderful to see her again, growing in her faith. She continues to be connected to the weekly campus Bible study, and we are so thankful that there is now a growing community around her.
Daniel said, "I am so filled with joy!" as we shared the Gospel with students
On Monday, we went on campus to set up the table survey and do some clipboard surveys (a simple way to get to know students and find out their spiritual interest). As Daniel and I were clipboarding, he says to me, "I am so filled with joy!"
It fills me with joy to hear students say they are filled with joy as they lovingly share the Gospel with other students!
Watching the formation of two Bible studies on campus
On Tuesday, the second day we were on campus, we had a Bible study right there in the quad (the main hangout area of campus). Several students joined, and it was agreed that Daniel will continue to lead a Bible study weekly at that time. And then on Wednesday, we did another Bible study..... and once again, we had half a dozen students join. Cody agreed to lead a weekly Wednesday Bible study.
Daniel training Tryston in the clipboard spiritual survey
We were staying with good friends of ours in Felton: Tom and Heath. Tom told us on our second day as we were eating dinner together: "You know, I need to connect you with Tryston; he is a college student at Cabrillo College and loves the Lord." Logan texted Tryston and we agreed to meet up the next day on campus.
When we met him on campus the next day, we shared with him what we are all about: starting a discipleship movement (CRU) on campus. He said, "I'm in!" We showed him a few Bible study tools, and then Daniel took him out to do some evangelism (the clipboard survey). The first guy they talked to was a believer named Adrian who was also excited to join us. Adrian and Trystan are now being equipped to share their faith; we pray that they too would soon be discipling others.
Sitting at a table in the cafeteria and having students we had just met bringing their friends over to the table to take the spiritual survey
Later that same day, we were eating lunch together at the school cafeteria. Before we knew it, several others students were joining us to learn more about CRU. Logan and I soon had to leave to head back home to Sonora. As we left, several students (whom we had just taught how to do the spiritual survey) were now drawing friends of theirs over to the table to take them through the spiritual survey. By the time we left, it seemed we had at least 15 students who had expressed interest in joining CRU at Cabrillo College.
What an amazing trip!
We left praising God for an amazing three days. We felt like we were living the modern book of Acts.
Thank you for praying for us and praising God with us for His faithfulness.
Last week I went to Santa Cruz with Logan and Jessika Hensley to do campus ministry at Cabrillo College. It was a wonderful three days! Here a few highlights and answers to prayer:
Thank you for praying for us! Continue to pray for Cabrillo College. May the Lord bring about a spiritual renewal at Cabrillo College and in Santa Cruz.
I met Daniel on campus at Columbia College (in Sonora) a bit over a year ago. Daniel loves the Lord and was looking for a way to make an impact for the Gospel at Columbia College. I am so thankful for the privilege that God gave me to disciple Daniel! After meeting regularly with him and teaching him One Thing Studies and Discovery Studies, he was anxious to pour his life into others. I remember the first time I took him out Clipboarding (our mobile spiritual survey). Within a few minutes he was leading the way and I was having a hard time catching up as he approached students walking on campus and engaged them in our survey. Soon Daniel was leading a Bible Study on campus and then doing all of the legwork to make us an official campus club.
I love Daniel's commitment and passion. At one point he told me about his intentions to transfer to Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz. Of course I was bummed to be 'losing' him in Sonora. But I was so excited (and not surprised) when he informed me that he couldn't wait to share the Gospel and make disciples at Cabrillo College. I told him that I want to do everything I can to help him make it happen.
I get texts and phone calls from Daniel regularly telling God-Stories about his time doing spiritual surveys on campus. He already has met a handful of students who have expressed interest!
Next week Logan and Jessika Hensley and I will be driving to Santa Cruz to spend three days helping Daniel make disciples at Cabrillo College. Here are some things you can pray for us:
1) That the Lord would use us to be a HUGE encouragement to Daniel.
2) That the Lord would connect us to some local churches and leaders who grab ahold of the vision to make disciples at Cabrillo College.
3) That as we do spiritual surveys on campus with Daniel, the Lord would connect us to believing students who would want to join us. May the Lord connect us with more Daniels!
4) That as we lovingly share the Gospel with students, the Lord might use us to bring some to saving faith.
The Yorks are passionate about bringing the Gospel to the nations - especially the unreached of the world (those who have no access to the Gospel). They are convinced that the greatest impact they can have in reaching the unreached is by multiplying disciples on college campuses and equipping churches to be missional disciple-makers.
