One of the coolest things about my job is that I get to meet with other CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) staff and strategize how to reach many campuses with so few resources; most of the CRU staff in southern CA have half a dozen or more campuses in their scope but simply don't have the time to invest time on those campuses. Many of those campuses are community colleges.
I get the privilege of helping them to connect with local churches, and then I get to help them equip those local churches to reach the campus near them.
When I was in Southern California a few weeks ago, I got to meet with three CRU staff who oversee 11 community college campuses between the three of them. I even got to go on campus with one of them (picture above) to do some spiritual surveys. I cannot wait to help them equip local churches!
Pray for these 11 campuses! Pray that the Lord would continue to connect me and these 3 CRU staff with local churches who would want to learn how to make disciples on their nearby community college campus: Irvine Valley College, Orange Coast College, Saddleback College, Cerritos College, Cypress College, Long Beach City College, Mt. San Antonio College, Rio Hondo College, Fullerton College, Pasadena City College.
The best way to start a discipleship movement on a community college campus is to find a nearby church that has a passion for reaching college students and then equipping them with a simple strategy and tools to multiply disciples on campus (The Discipleship Tree).
After doing some research and discovering that there is little Christian presence on campus at Tahoe Community College, I decided to look for a nearby church. I called the local Baptist. The pastor answered. He was so happy to hear from me! When I told him that my goal is to help local churches make disciples at their nearby community college, he said: "When can you come!?"
I ended up visiting that weekend. And what a privilege to stay at pastor Alan's home.
I was able to teach a few folks at the church the simple tools for evangelism and disciple-making....
I cannot wait for the opportunity to go back and train some of those leaders on campus!
Pray for the Lord to accomplish his purpose of a disciple-making movement at Tahoe Community College!
A discipleship movement is in process at Napa Valley College!
First, about a month ago I was able to join a friend of mine (who is on CRU staff) on campus during 'Club Day' to show some students how to do spiritual surveys. We connected with half a dozen students who were interested! The next week we had our first Bible study on campus.
Then last week I had the great privilege of meeting up for a cup of coffee in Napa with a local college leader: Kenny. I walked him through a simple strategy for discovering spiritual interest on campus and making disciples who make disciples....
It looks like he and some other leaders and students at his church will start doing outreach and disciple-making on campus. I told him I am all about helping in any way I can. I can't wait to get on campus with them!
Pray for Napa Valley College!
Me and Kenny after enjoying some great fellowship over a cup of coffee.
Hillside Community Church is right next door to Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga! I sent them an email expressing interest in helping them reach the college near them with the Gospel, and they excitedly responded that they had recently been thinking and praying as a staff about how to do just that!
Then a few weeks ago I got to visit with several of the staff over lunch and share with them a simple strategy for making disciples on campus.... I can't wait to see what the Lord does next!
Pray for a fruitful discipleship movement at Chaffey College!
Hope Christian Church in Fairfield is a wonderful church that wants to make disciples at Solano Community College! Last week I had the privilege of going on campus with them to train them in discovering spiritual interest on campus and following up with interested students.
After spending a few hours on campus, we already had at least one weekly Bible study established as well as several local disciple-makers equipped and passionate about reaching the campus with the Gospel. We also shared the Gospel with dozens of students.
Keep praying for a thriving discipleship movement at Solano Community College!
I just finished campus time at Lassen Community College in Susanville, CA. The goal for being here for a few days is to help Community Church of Susanville reach out to their local community college campus.
What a success!
Highlights have been:
1) getting to know the college leadership team
2) equipping the college leadership team to discover spiritual interest on campus, share the Gospel, and teach students how to do One Thing Studies.
3) helping the leadership team to see how simple and effective it is to disciple students and equip students to share their faith and disciple other students.
4) from being on campus for a few hours we connected with about 5 students who want to meet up again to read the Bible!
5) we got to share the Gospel with about a dozen students
6) several students we met on campus plan to come to the college group meeting tonight!
There is now the beginnings of a discipleship movement at Lassen Community College! Praise the Lord!
Eric and Hunter are now experts at leading the Soularium Spiritual Survey.
Last week I got to spend a day doing campus ministry at Monterey Peninsula College.
I am so thankful that I got to meet Tyler! Tyler is a youth pastor in Carmel, and his home actually overlooks Monterey Peninsula College. We visited over lunch on Tuesday and talked about what that could look like to be making disciples on campus, and then we made plans to actually go on campus together on Thursday and do some spiritual surveys. We had some amazing conversations!
Fast-forward a few days… and today I got a text from Tyler that he was on campus training two students in evangelism and disciple-making, and they loved it! More than that… they met a student who expressed interest in meeting up again. They are supposed to meet up on Friday.
Praise the Lord for the work He is doing at Monterey Peninsula College!
And please pray for Tyler, that the Lord would continue to give him great effectiveness in making disciples who make disciples on campus at Monterey Peninsula College.
We are all about equipping college students to be passionately committed to:
Prayer, God’s Word, Evangelism, Disciple-making, and Missions.
Thank you for investing in us and in this ministry; we could not do it without you!
Here is a picture of Tyler sharing the Gospel with an interested student.
The Yorks are passionate about bringing the Gospel to the nations - especially the unreached of the world (those who have no access to the Gospel). They are convinced that the greatest impact they can have in reaching the unreached is by multiplying disciples on college campuses and equipping churches to be missional disciple-makers.
