West Hills College in Coalinga has almost 7,000 students in attendance (and some of them are international students from unreached people-groups!). There is no evangelism and disciple-making ministry reaching those students on campus!
So a few weeks ago, I called a church in Coalinga and was able to talk with the new youth pastor, Jarod. I asked him if he’d be interested in talking about reaching the campus with the Gospel. He said ‘Yes!’
On Tuesday I drove to Coalinga to grab lunch with Jarod. Over lunch I told him about how he could have a huge impact on campus simply by devoting a few hours a week to disciple-making on campus, and I offered to train him and give him resources so that he can have the greatest impact. He texted me this morning that he had already spoken with a few others about our conversation.
Pray for Jarod, that the Lord would continue to bless his ministry, and that the Lord would use him to make a HUGE impact for the Gospel on campus at West Hills College.
West Hills is one of the 113 community college campuses in California. Most of these campuses have no evangelism and disciple-making ministry reaching their students.
Pray with me for a Jarod near every community college campus!
Our vision is to equip a local church to reach every single one of the 113 community colleges in California by 2020.
Wednesday I was going through my list of community colleges in CA (there are 113 of them!), determined to do all I can to move one step closer to finding a pastor near every campus who wants to own the mission of reaching that campus with the Gospel.
I send emails. I make phone calls. Many of them are dead ends.... but I try not to get discouraged.
Next on my list is Reedley College (which is just south of Fresno).
I google "churches in Reedley."
I find a church that looked like a good possibility.
I call the church office.
The church secretary transfers me to the youth pastor.
I get his voicemail. On his outgoing message he gives his cell phone number, saying "call me on my cell 'cause I'm not in my office now."
I call his cell phone number.
I tell him that I am with CRU and that I am passionate about helping pastors and churches reach the community college campus near them.
He is interested! He tells me that their church is right across the street from the college, and of course they want to reach those students.
We decide to grab lunch sometime. He says Thursdays are good for him. I say, "It is short notice, but what about tomorrow?"
He says "Yes! Why not! We'll do it while it is fresh on my mind."
So we had lunch in Reedley yesterday. It was quite a drive for me (about six hours of driving yesterday). But as usual, it was SO WORTH IT!
Jordan and I sit down at a restaurant in downtown Reedley and the first thing he says to me after we sit down:
"I am just the kind of youth pastor you are looking for, because I want to reach Reedley College with the Gospel, but I just don't know how. I am ready to learn how."
In summary: We had a great visit! Jordan expressed his desire to lead his church in reaching Reedley College. He is soon going to be encouraging and equipping the prayer warriors in his church to be praying for Reedley College. (Spiritual renewal ALWAYS begins with prayer, right?!) And we soon will be making plans for my return to Reedley to do some evangelism and disciple-making training with him and his students and his church.
Praise the Lord for....
Let us continue praying for a movement of God on campus at Reedley College.
The Yorks are passionate about bringing the Gospel to the nations - especially the unreached of the world (those who have no access to the Gospel). They are convinced that the greatest impact they can have in reaching the unreached is by multiplying disciples on college campuses and equipping churches to be missional disciple-makers.
